Bren kicked a stone out of his way with a sigh as he plopped through the trees over the hillside. He'd show them. His stupid father and older brothers. They could train all day until they passed out for all he cared. They'd miss his food soon enough when dinner time came and there was no food ready! That'd show them!
What was the point in developing a fighting style anyways? So he could grow up and wear a dress like his dad? No thanks! It was boring and hard. But cooking, now that was a true art!
And speak of the devil!
Bren bent down and scooped up a nice, fresh berry that had just fallen from its tree. What luck! He would dine well tonight! More than could be said for the rest of his family.
He balanced the berry on one shoulder, then bent down and collected a few sticks and staked out a camping area. He was far enough away that even if his brothers were to come looking for him, they wouldn't find him before morning. They were at the very peak of one of the rocky hills, and they wouldn't make it back to the den before dark, let alone make it all the way out here.
Within minutes, Bren had a solid blaze going in a fire pit surrounded by rocks. He had rolled up a log as a seat, and he was roasting his prize berry on a spit. A heavenly scent drifted out from his campsite, carried by the mild forest breeze as he tossed on a few spices.
It was that delicious aroma of the cooking meal that had attracted his first guest.

Arelius sighed and kept walking over the area, his stomach growling. He found some berries a while ago and made a small leaf bag he carried them in. He decided not to eat them yet though. He sighed again and rubbed his head.
"Maybe leaving home was a bad idea...I miss Human Riley's cooing..." He mumbled to himself, remembering when his old master would feed him about this time everyday and he would eat with his father...but they always thought he was weaker than he was. That and his aim for his specie's signature move was...well....his aim was awful, he'll just say that.
He sniffed the air and his stomach growled and he started running to the area, stopping when he saw a fighting type cooking...fighting type....cooking?
"Um, hi," he said, smiling. "That smells pretty good, what is it?"

"Aaahck!" Bren jumped back from his fire, eyes wide in panic as the riolu made its presence known. Almost immediately he jumped back to the spit and turned it over. "Oh no! It almost burnt!" he gasped, then turned his focus back to his guest.
"You scared the heck outta me!" he said with a heavy breath. Then the question registered in his mind. "Oh this?" he asked, looking from his guest to his meal, then back again. "Its one of my specialties: Roast Kelpsy berry. I don't get to make it often because... Well, nobody appreciates this one ever" Bren sighed, then turned the spit again.
"I suppose you wanna take it though" he pouted as he rested his cheek in the palm of his hand.

Mavi jumped back as well and shook his head, holding up his hands in defense.
"No no! Not if it's your food! Here, maybe you can cook these too..." he said while opening the leaf back to show a ton of different berries.
"Actually I think it smells delicious, you must be a good cook." He said, sitting down by his little plate of berries. "What can you do with this one?" He asked, holding up an Oran berry.
"Oh, I almost forgot!" He stood up and put his paw on the center of his chest and bowed slightly, like Human Riley and his father taught him to say hello and good bye. "I'm Arelius, but most call me Mavi. I'm a Riolu."

Bren relaxed. He felt silly being so on edge, but with the day he had had earlier, how could he not? He took a deep breath and let a smile out.
"Nice to meet you, Mavi. I'm Bren, a tyrogue. Do you really think my berry smells good?" A look of excitement spread across his face as he saw all the berries that Mavi had collected. And an oran berry! Wow! Those weren't just delicious, but they were supposed to be very refreshing too! It wasn't often that he came across them, but he had a few tricks up his sleeve.
He turned the spit once more, then removed it and propped it into the ground so that it could stand and cool. Then he moved up to his guest and picked up the oran berry.
"Wow, its a big one!" Bren beamed. "We could saute it! That's the best way to make'um... Well, it's the best way I know" he shrugged, then placed it back down.
"Are you, uh, hiking?" Bren ventured a guess.

Mavi smiled and nodded, "It smells great!" He watched as the Bren removed the cooked berry and placed it to the side, to cool most likely.
"Saute? Never heard of that, but I bet it's some great cooking skill!" He laughed, smiling. At response to the question he thought about his answer.
"No...not hiking. I left home to prove to Human Riley and my father I'm not worthless...but that's not important at all!" he laughed again, watching to see what Bren would do next with the berry.

"Oh.." Bren skipped a breath. Mavi's answer caught him off guard. How very, similar. But Mavi was right. Those kinds of things didn't matter out here. He'd gotten away from that, he hoped, and he hoped to keep it that way.
"Here, I'll show you" Bren smiled, picking up the oran berry again. "The skin on these gives off a really nice oil if you heat it up, watch." Bren moved to his fire pit and shuffled it around with a stick until the flames died down low. Next, he used a nice, flat rock that he had kept nearby and tossed it atop the coals.
"Hmmm..." he hummed, rubbing his chin and looking around as the rock heated up. "Ah" he said in delight, plucking a sharp-edged rock from his pile. "I knew I'd left this somewhere."
Right away, he set to work skinning off the oran berry's outer peel. Once it was off, he set the berry's innard on a leaf and diced the peel into a score of pieces, then tossed those pieces onto the rock.
"Look look!" Bren shivered in excitement, waving a hand for Mavi to come watch. He bent over the coal pit to watch the magic. The pieces of peel began to shrivel up, emitting sizzling noises as a thin, light-orange liquid began to seep out from them. The most amazing smell wafted up as the liquid filled the rock and pooled into its center.
"Now we just get rid of the garbage stuff" Bren said, poking the shriveled skin off of the rock. He reached back for his spices, sprinkled them on and stirred them in, and then grabbed the oran berry.
"These split up easy on the inside like this" Bren said matter-of-factly, tearing it into four clean wedges and laying each upon the rock. The wedges made small popping sounds in the sizzling sauce. Bren gave them a moment to sit before flipping them over, and then again onto their crescent side moments after that.
"Done!" he announced. "Not only is this the best tasting way to prepare an oran berry- this is one of the fastest ways to fix them too!" He broke his poking stick in half and used it like chop sticks to lift each wedge from the rock, placing them on the leaf.
The aroma from the four wedges rivaled the kelpsy berry that was still sitting on the spit a few feet away. Their edges were now crisped and golden, though should someone bite into them, they'd be surprised at the juicey, rich flavored center that would await!
"Careful, they'll be hot for a while. If there's one thing you ever learn about cooking oran berries, its that they keep their heat really well!"
Bren grabbed the kelpsy berry from the spit and broke it in half along its center ridge. "Wanna share this one while we wait?" he said smiling, offering half to Mavi.

Mavi watched in awe as the skin peels shriveled up. Cooking he was horrible at, but Bren here seemed really good at it! Surprising for a fighting type. He smiled as Bren fixed the rest of the berry up, watching what he as doing, trying to commit it to memory but it wasn't working that well.
When Bren offered the berry he smiled and nodded.
"I'd love a piece!" he said happily, taking it and biting into it, the flavor bursting forth. "Wow! This is delicious!" he exclaimed, hurriedly eating the rest.

Bren's own kelpsy half had disappeared in no time. He reached for an oran slice, but withdrew his hand. Head was still radiating from them, and it would be another five, or maybe even ten minutes until they cooled enough. Pesky oran berries.
"So, what's a ... uh. Did you say riolu?" Bren asked, trying to pass the time. He had never seen a pokemon like Mavi before.

Mavi smiled brightly and nodded, he was proud of his species.
"Yeah, a Riolu." he answered, really wanting to see how good the Oran berry tasted, but knowing that he wasn't the best of cooks, he should wait until Bren gave him some.

"What's a riolu do?" Bren continued. "I know somethings, but I've never seen anybody that looks like you before. Do you fight too? Or, maybe you dig?" Bren studied Mavi up and down.

Come to think of it, the question Bren asked was something Mavi asked himself all the time.
"Well, my father and Human Riley always said that Lucarios, my final evolution, are supposed to be honorable and helpful...but I don't know about me." He sighed and crossed his arms, still thinking.
"Well, I fight, but not much."

"My dad wanted me to fight" Bren came out with it. "He can fight, and my brothers all fight, and they are all really good at it." He pouted and sat down with a plop. "Not me though. So they pick on me. Well, we'll see how much they miss my dinners every night! Ha!" his glum expression matched the sour voice he spoke with.
"That's why I'm out here, ya know" he said softer. "I ran away. But I can make it. I know how to find food, and that's all you really need to know in order to make it on your own" he chuckled.
"What about you? Your dad and, humanriley want you to do something you don't like too? And, what's a humanriley? Is that your mom?" Bren let the words fly from his watering mouth, striving to make time go by quicker. The smells from the oran berry wedges were making him very hungry, but he'd burn himself if he grabbed one still.

Mavi frowned when he heard the story and nodded.
"True that's all you need, and you shouldn't fight unless you want to. It's not fair that they pick on you." he sighed when he was asked the questions and smiled.
"Human Riley was my past trainer. My master, my owner, whatever you want to call him. They didn't really respect me, them being Human Riley and my father. I mean, I know Aura Sphere, a special move among my species but I can't aim to save my life." he chuckled and rubbed the back of his head.

"It's a horrible feeling when people don't respect you, like your, uh, trainer. I guess my trainer would have to be my dad. He was in charge of me and my brothers, and he was the big boss. I don't like him though, so I don't think I'm going back ever" Bren nodded forcefully, as if to ensure himself that his words were true.
"Alright, let's try this" he said, hesitantly reaching out for a wedge of the oran berry. Tentatively, he touched it with just one finger. It was warm, but not hot. "Perfect!" he exclaimed, picking it up. A small scorch mark had been left in the leaf below it, a testament to it's previous heat. Bren picked up another slice and set it in his lap, then looked to Mavi.
"You try yours too!" Bren exclaimed, forcing the remaining two wedges to his guest.
